Episode 2:
Hey Fantasy Lovers! As we continue my World Building and Lore Series, where I’ll post several episodes about all the interesting things that make up a good dark fantasy story, let’s continue! Today I’ll be chatting about the supernatural world of magic! So, where does it really come from? In my world, the answer is darker than you think… ✨
Magic Through the Histories
From the dawn of the earliest cultures, magic has lived. From divination and spells to charms and amulets, to the very forces of nature, it has thrived. We even see supernatural drawings through cave art and gaze with awe at artifacts seen at monuments known wo have magical influence. And add to that, some call it science of the old. Practices such as astrology and alchemy were among them. Up to today, magic continues to amaze us with the rich lore, among modern practitioners and those who delve into the mystery and intrigue of the magicks.
In my world, magic is well and alive. I pull from the classic old elemental styles, but put a twist on it with other elements such as emotion and mental fortitude. All magic must be channeled through a conduit of some sort. My magic exists through an energy flowing within the mortal plane of my world, known as ether. Without it, it could not be pulled from. But that’s not to say there aren’t other properties at work! The books dive into this fun notion and it’s been a joy to write.
A Deeper Dive into the Immortal Magical System
In book 1 we learn about the Lorns, powerful otherworldly creatures who have descended from the Fallen Angels. These beings possess abilities, usually singular gifts that allow them to utilize a myriad of skills akin to magical powers. But they are different. These do not pull from the ether but rather their deeply rooted divine essence. Think of them as a passenger among the ether instead of a driver.
That said, the magic in my world follows five concentrations known as factions. Upon the five points of a star exist each faction of magic. When we meet Kate, the first protagonist Ethan’s older sister, we learn that she is a powerful witch, capable of awesome magical ability. As she takes the stage in the following books, we learn more about her strengths and weaknesses as she grows as a budding witch. Her determination and grit make her a strong witch despite her still learning the ways of the craft.
And while these five factions govern all of magic in my world, there is a hidden one at the center of it all… one you learn about in book 2 of the series! And just know, it is super dangerous yet full of unbridled power!
How Does it all Work?
Short answer: very dramatically! I had so much fun writing about this magical system and I was excited to do something different and new. Here is a simple chart of what each one pulls from:

A Promise to Keep You on Your Toes
As with every story, they are unique and offer something different to the reader. My stories are known to have continued high stakes. I love keeping my readers on their toes when it come to action and crazy situations. I adore my chracters but goodness do they endure a lot! But the best part is they grow from each experience. Character growth is important to me and I want my readers to experience that.
